You can take it however you want, like every Thing that comes your way in the world.  You can look at it with acid on your tongue and moan about being alone forever, and you can call it an excuse to pressure people into dropping cash on a bunch of crap.  People see it that way, people whose opinions I value and respect.

But then, you have this other, completely wonderful option.  Maybe it’s not what the holiday was going to be originally, but we can, we have, turned it into a day to celebrate love.  Love is what drives us, all of us, every day, even if we pretend otherwise.  It’s love that put us on this planet and it’s love that makes us put on our friggin’ clothes every morning and do our thing.  Love is everywhere, it’s in EVERYTHING, and it’s so easy, you just do it, you don’t have to sit around and say that love never happens to you, you just fucking make it happen, you can love your mom and you can love your friend and you can love your cat and you can love the guy who bags up your groceries.  You can love the band who sings your favorite tune, you can love the Buddhist monks who spend every single day doing good things for everyone else, you can even love the jerk who cuts you off in traffic because that’s exactly what we’re supposed to do.

Valentine’s Day isn’t a collection of Bismol-pink teddy bears and cheap cards that get tossed in the rubbish two days later, it’s a holiday just to celebrate that most brilliant and mysterious and magical of human emotions, that frightening and powerful force that knocks out any other in the world.  It’s not about buying shit for your girlfriend or making sure you get laid or telling someone you love them for one day a year.  It’s just a day to celebrate, to pay respect to and honor love.  This is the thing which gave you life, which makes your life worth living once you learn how to do it.  You realize that, and you bow your head to love, if not all year long, then at least every February the fourteenth.

On Valentine’s Day, I appreciate not just my partner if I have one (and lucky I do), but everyone I love.  And the point, of course, is to love everyone.
