Random story time! So my mother is raising her first brood of chickens (since I'm home I get to help) and they're almost old enough to lay. We thought we got Giant Cochins (these very fluffy chickens have feather uggs!), Buff Orpingtons (your standard chicken), and Golden Wyandottes (their wings look like stained glass!) all female. But it turns out three of her buffs are actually Ameraucanas- or easter eggers (they lay green and blue shelled eggs) and one of them is actually a Rooster!

Okay, sister, I’m gonna go ahead and just call you on this — I’m gonna say that I don’t actually believe that so many varieties of seemingly magical fairytalesque chickens exist on this planet. They wear boots and look like stained glass and lay magical multicolored eggs? Are those eggs filled with chocolate, perhaps? Do they likewise poo glitter? Does their crow sound like when Ben Cumberbatch sings in the shower? Are they Chickogriffs? Mantichickens? Loch Ness Roosters?

I think you might be pulling my tail, friend. You might have to supply me with hard, photographic evidence of these mythical creatures. If I spot one Photoshopped rainbow or unicorn horn, I’m callin’ this chicken bluff right here.

How many times have I thought to myself, honestly, “You need to exercise because when you get picked for Hunger Games/get attacked by aliens/are a lonely survivor of the Z Wars YOU WILL DIE FIRST.” Which should be a message up on my fridge, but I never go running anyway. Hey Cait — the mainland treating you okay? Part of me wonders what it’d be like to go back — more affordable, surely. Hawaii is a confused little place with a lot of pros and cons. When I lived on the mainland, I so craved that tropical atmosphere that I tried to fake it, to decorate the house with seashells and try to visualize mountains in the distance. Being here feels right to me — I don’t have to fake it. I think I was meant to be by the warm ocean, surrounded by the smell of sunscreen and barbecue, bright colors, reggae music, giant insects. I feel right here.

Six pounds, all right! That’s awesome. My dad told me to visualize the pounds in equivalent sticks of butter, and imagine them being gone, to let it sink in how much you’ve really gotten rid of. Not that I don’t love a little extra butter on a hot biscuit like you and me, but it’s nice to do something you’re proud of! Good luck on the interview, sweetness! I hate interviews, so I feel for you.

I understand. The world is scary — it’s big and full of humans and full of change. This is hard. But you know deep down, I think, that hiding, even though it’s the easy decision, isn’t the healthiest. Does that mean you have to stride naked down the street with a sign that says “HELLO FELLOW HUMANS, GREET ME!”? No. You alone know what pace is best for you, and what’s comfortable. I can say that some of the best friends I’ve made have come from moments when I put one little pinky toe outside my comfort bubble. You don’t have to go crazy, but remember that you live in this world, you are part of this great big swirling spinning whole that is made up of all of us, and we love you. We want to know you.

Here’s the thing: the world can be scary as shit. We know this. It’s full of fuckwads and pointy things and heartache. But it’s also full of amazing crap that happens every day. People are surprising, they’re generous, funny, intelligent, miraculous, adorable, and they need love just as much as you need it, and they need to give love just as much as you need to give it. It’s okay to want to stay in with some cocoa and a book, don’t let anyone say you can’t, but it’s also okay to chat with your barista or go meet someone new.

Accepting the scary parts and the sad parts and the parts outside our comfort zone, that’s all important. The things that hurt or scare us are just as important as the good stuff, and getting hurt or being scared is so much easier to deal with when you have a whole family of humans to go through it with.
